Death of an activist: Rachel Corrie was a college student who loved Salvador Dali and Pat Benatar. She was just 23 years old when she left her home in Olympia, Washington, to follow her political beliefs into the Middle East. She ended up trying to stand her ground in the path of an Israeli bulldozer and being crushed to death, dying for her belief in a Palestinian homeland. Crafted by the late actor/director Alan Rickman and journalist Katharine Viner, “My Name Is Rachel Corrie” tells the story of the American activist. The Sawtooth Productions touring play, which has generated plenty of controversy with its condemnation of Israel’s treatment of Palestinans, begins a run at Magic Theatre in San Francisco April 27. Details: Through May 14; Building D at Fort Mason complex, San Francisco; $25-$50; 415-441-8822. magictheatre.org.— Karen D’Souza, Staff.

There was something for everyone, with a galaxy of entertainers performing a wide range of music, starting with DJ Dinero and Dueling Pianos in the tented Courthouse Square, and ending with the band Foreverland that closed out the evening with a sensational show performing Michael Jackson’s decades of hits. The crowd had so much fun dancing (the dance floor was installed in the Fox Theatre) that — unlike Cinderella — no one wanted to leave at closing time. The evening at the Fox kicked off with Escala, a knock-out British quartet of gorgeous young women who play their unique arrangements of pop songs on electrified string instruments. Escala — Tasya Hodges on cello, Chantal Leverton on viola, Victoria Lyon on violin and Honor Watson on violin — won “Britain’s Got Talent” show in 2008. Part of the sizzle is the group’s concert-level performance paired with precision-choreographed dance steps. Their last piece, “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin, received a standing ovation.
